In a tragic turn of events, champion bodybuilder Andre Cavalcanti lost his life in a harrowing car accident in Brazil. The incident occurred on the BR-369 road between Ibiporã and Jataizinho, where Cavalcanti, aged 34, was struck by a 17-year-old driving without a license. The head-on collision resulted in the immediate death of the accomplished athlete. Vitor Dutra, the chief of police in the area, explained that the accident unfolded when the teenager, who had taken the car without his parents’ knowledge, crashed directly into Cavalcanti’s motorcycle. The teenager’s parents were unaware that their son had taken their vehicle for a joyride with two other minors, aged 15 and 17. Following the crash, the teenagers were transported to the hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries. The 17-year-old driver may face adult charges akin to manslaughter due to the gravity of the incident. Adding to the somber news, Eustacio Batista Dias, a 27-year-old Brazilian, was shot and killed while attempting to escape his assailants. This is a sad story, but I thought it was important to share. These pictures are from an abandoned estate in France. In the 1980s, the family who lived here was in a horrific car accident that killed everyone except the mother. Her husband and two young children were lost in the accident. The mother’s grief was unbearable and she stayed in this large house by herself for years. She used the walls and scribbled thoughts and poems all throughout the house. One such line in French reads… “Here, I don’t feel loneliness: who knows? Maybe I’m not really alone.” As her mental state declined, she was institutionalized, where she eventually died. In October 2023, Nick Volkov came across a unique listing for a house and just knew he had to show it to his girlfriend, Jenna Phipps, a 28-year-old content creator. Though the listing included pictures of the exterior only and described the house as a “tear-down,” the 27-year-old program manager tells CNBC Make It that what stood out the most about the property in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was that it was undervalued, had a water view, and wasn’t a standard modern house. Phipps says she fell in love with the property and knew they had to go see it immediately, but “when we finally got to see the house [in person], we saw it was a lot worse.” “There was a reason they didn’t show photos of the inside,” she says. The property in question is a 2,757-square-foot single-family home built in 1961. It has three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a pool, and 0.30 acres of land. The house had holes in the roof and high levels of moisture throughout from all the water that had come in over the years. In 2019, I rented a loft in Wheeling, West Virginia. I had just quit my job to work on restoring historic buildings. Between working at the Wheeling National Heritage Area and being welcomed by the town’s tight-knit community, Wheeling quickly felt like home. But I wasn’t planning to buy a house until I saw the 3,075-square-foot McLain House during a walk through the East Wheeling Historic District. I was immediately drawn to its location, an up-and-coming neighborhood full of beautiful architecture. Built in 1892, the house had tons of original detail and came with an enormous side lot. Finding quality masons with experience with historic brick that won’t cost a fortune wasn’t easy. I probably met with a dozen masons, getting quotes ranging from $20,000 to $65,000.
