Simone Biles appeared to take a dig at Donald Trump on social media in response to the former president’s “Black jobs” remark. “I love my black job,” the Olympic gold medalist posted on X, formerly Twitter, in response to a post from singer Ricky Davila, who had said: “Iconic photo of the GOAT mastering her black job and collecting Gold Medals.” Trump made headlines for the “Black job” comment when he appeared at the National Association of Black Journalists conference this week.  When pressed by moderators at the journalism convention to elaborate on what personified a “Black job,” the Republican presidential candidate told attendees that “a Black job is anybody that has a job,” resulting in groans from the audience. Trump received criticism from some for arguing during his televised debate with President Joe Biden in June that migrants are taking “Black jobs” and “Hispanic jobs” from Americans.  Biles got into the social media exchange after she defeated Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade to win the all-around Paris Olympics gymnastics finals on Thursday, claiming her ninth gold medal. At 27, Biles is the oldest Olympic women’s gymnastics champion since 1952, per the AP.

Frauenstein Castle (German: Burg Frauenstein) is a ruined castle in the town of Wiesbaden-Frauenstein in Hesse, Germany. It is not known who built Frauenstein Castle, but, based on dendrochronological evidence, its construction has been dated to around 1184.Built on a quartzite outcropping of the Spitzen Stein the castle was not intended as a defensive fortress, but rather as a watch-tower. It also served the tower guards as a dwelling. The construction of the castle with its high walls and battlements gave protection to farmers in the area and led to the emergence of the village of the same name. Later, the castle was extended by a fore-castle with pond, as could be confirmed by excavations in the year 1943. While the German name Frauen-stein can be translated “women’s stone”, it actually derives from Vrowenstein, a name which first appears in the historical record in 1221. In that year, a deed names a Heinrich Bodo von Vrowenstein (in 1207/1209, he was mentioned as being from Idstein) as a lord of Frauenstein Castle.In the year 1231, a document of the Erbach monastery mentions a knight by the name of Siegfried von Frauenstein who was a marshal with the bishopric of Mainz. A Turkish shooter competing in the Olympics is gaining a following on social media for his performance at the Paris games.  Who is Yusuf Dikec? Yusuf Dikec began competing in shooting in 2001 and is a four-time Olympian and has competed at every Summer Olympics since 2008.  The 51-year-old is also a seven-time European champion and 2014 double world champion in the 25m standard pistol and 25m centerfire pistol, according to his Olympics biography. Dikec studied at the Gazi University School of Physical Training and Education (Ankara, Turkey) and received a Master’s in Coaching from the Selcuk University (Konya, Turkey). His hobbies are dancing and he lives by the philosophy “Success doesn’t come with your hands in your pockets,” per his bio.   Why did Dikec go viral? Dikec has made the rounds on social media for an image that shows the Olympic competitor shooting in a T-shirt with one hand in his pocket, and wearing a pair of glasses with a stoic expression on his face. Waylon, a shy Australian cattle  dog mix, spent over two years at the SafeHaven Humane Society in Oregon, becoming the shelter’s longest resident. This heartwarming story highlights the challenges faced by shy animals in shelters, the unwavering dedication of shelter staff, and the joy of finding the perfect match. Overcoming shyness: A long road to adoption Upon arrival in June 2022, Waylon’s shyness and discomfort in new situations became evident. Shelter staff, like Carly Peterson, knew he needed a special adopter. Waylon thrived mentally, being highly intelligent and eager to please. However, new people and environments triggered anxiety, making socialization difficult. Initially, Waylon struggled in the bustling shelter environment. He often hid and avoided other dogs. Recognizing this, the staff developed a new routine in 2023, implementing daily playgroups for canine interaction. Gradually introduced, Waylon found a few canine companions, even engaging in playtime – a significant milestone. Despite progress with other dogs, Waylon’s apprehension towards people persisted. To create a calmer environment, the staff housed him in a quieter area and explored anxiety medication options. The Jenkinson House, or Jenkinson-Cady-Secory house in Port Huron, had been called out in Buildings of Michigan (Kathryn Bishop Eckert,1993:352): “This beautifully painted and restored house is Military Street’s largest and most ornate Queen Anne structure.”  With such an accolade coming from a former State Historic Preservation Officer, one would think that it would have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places by now, but no. However, that will soon change (“soon” by bureaucratic standards, anyway). The Jenkinson House as shown on a post card that was mailed in 1919. Research on this house had been conducted in the past, but further research, fact-checking, documentation, and much writing went into the current nomination process.  Once finalized for listing, the detailed nomination form will be available to the public, but in the meantime here are some property history highlights. The Obama family is devastated by the death of their personal chef, Tafari Campbell, who drowned while paddleboarding near their vacation home. Campbell, a former White House chef, disappeared while paddleboarding on a Martha’s Vineyard lake. Massachusetts State Police reported he struggled to stay afloat and then submerged. After an overnight search, his body was found. The Obamas expressed their grief, calling Campbell “a beloved part of our family.”

Donald Trump falsely questioned Kamala Harris’ race during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago that quickly turned hostile on Wednesday. The Republican former president was invited to participate in a Q&A session with a panel of political journalists at the Hilton Hotel. The session started an hour late, and it was kicked off with criticism by ABC News senior congressional correspondent, Rachel Scott, one of the moderators.  Trump claimed that Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president, had in the past only promoted her Indian heritage. Simone Biles and Suni Lee won medals in the Olympic all-around final Thursday.  Biles won the gold medal and Lee earned the bronze.  At 27, Biles is the oldest Olympic women’s gymnastics champ since 1952. Biles edged Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade during a tense final.
