Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars

Posted on August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars

The blender makes easy work of this easy peasy silky-smooth dessert bar. I’m not here to put up an argument that cheesecake isn’t amazing, but the thing about it is that it can be kind of fussy, what with the water bath baking and all. But do you know what’s not fussy at all? These Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars. They combine a creamy cheesecake filling with a plentiful cinnamon sugar swirl and — as you might have guessed — they use the magic of the blender to get there. And the oven, but there’s no springform pan or cracked tops to worry about. One thing I love about these (there are many), is that you still get a classic crunchy graham cracker crust with these bars but you’ll be mixing brown sugar with your melted butter and graham cracker crumbs, which gives it a little bit of a richer toffee flavor than the traditional. You can use already crushed graham cracker crumbs or you can crush your own… I suppose you could use your blender there, but that’s really more for the next step. That next step would be the filling and it comes together entirely in the blender… CONTINUE READING…

Monte Cristo Sliders

Posted on August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Monte Cristo Sliders

Sweet, salty, and ready to party. On paper, the Monte Cristo is a sandwich that makes very little sense. Ham, turkey, swiss – okay that all seems normal… and then powdered sugar? And jam for dipping? What on earth! But, in reality, when you bite into one it is somehow absolutely delicious and it all makes sense. It’s like the embodiment of what sweet and salty combos should be. And here our Monte Cristo Sliders let you serve up that combo to a whole crew of people with no trouble at all. I love a party slider and I especially love these. You and your guests will too – it’s inevitable! What makes party sliders so easy and convenient is that they rely on a package of Hawaiian rolls for the bread. You simply slice the rolls in half but leave the rolls attached, and place the bottom section in your baking dish as your base. Then, you layer up your ingredients and bake everything at once, so you have easy prep and pull-apart sandwiches for as many as twelve people. It’s almost too easy. In this case, you’re layering those rolls with the aforementioned ham, turkey, and swiss cheese, but then also brushing… CONTINUE READING…

Southern Tea Cake Cookies

Posted on August 1, 2024August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Southern Tea Cake Cookies

A light texture and buttery flavor make these cookies truly special. When we get a craving for cookies, there is nothing like homemade to truly satisfy. And, when a cake-like cookie is what you have your heart set on a crispy cookie simply won’t do. Southern tea cake cookies have that wonderful light texture and buttery flavor. But, these cookies also have a centuries-old history in the South. Tea cake cookies are thought to have been created as the South’s answer to European tea cakes (the latter of which are more like cupcakes that are served with hot tea). Enslaved peoples during the 18th and 19th centuries would have served these cookies to the guests of the plantation owners. But when slavery ended the tradition for these cookies continued. Using what they had on hand, the cookies have a simple ingredient list. During the 19th century these cookies were often made with flour, lard, molasses, and a little nutmeg or vanilla and that’s it. African Americans spread the easy-to-remember recipe by word of mouth and the cookies became an integral part of Juneteenth celebrations in the years following the Civil War. Today the ingredient list may look a little different, but these… CONTINUE READING…

Maple Sugar Cream Pie

You’ll be hooked on the creamy filling! Oh my gosh, guys, if you’re looking for a silky smooth, decadent dessert with a flavor so rich and delicious it’ll have you begging for more, this is the recipe for you. While we all know and love the classic cream pies – banana and coconut = crowd favorites – we’ve got a different one for you today that we can easily see overthrowing the traditional faves. Embracing a slightly more autumnal flavor, this is a maple sugar cream pie, and WOW is it good. In case you haven’t made a cream pie from scratch before, don’t worry, it’s super easy. While some cream pies require making a thick, egg-based custard in a double-boiler, we make our cream filling without eggs, so there’s no need to fear accidentally scrambling your filling mixture and having to start over. Nope, it’s all easy-peasy over here. Now, to get that intense maple flavor you need two things: maple syrup and maple extract. Maple syrup is really the key here, as you can easily swap in vanilla extract if you can’t find maple extract. Together though, these two knock the flavor out of the park and leave… CONTINUE READING…

There’s an abandoned octagon house hidden in the San Francisco woods

There’s an abandoned octagon house hidden in the San Francisco woods

Most stories will tell you that San Francisco has two octagon homes. Both are pristinely maintained historic landmarks and sometimes even open for tours. But a third, often forgotten eight-sided house sits abandoned among the cypress woods on the cliff tops of Lands End. The unusually shaped home on the hill above the Cliff House was once one of the most important structures in San Francisco. Officially named the Point Lobos Marine Exchange Lookout Station, the building’s sole purpose was to let the city know who was sailing toward the bay. A lookout station existed at Lands End as far back as 1852, when hundreds of vessels filled with gold-fevered crew set sail for the Golden Gate. Initially, the means of communication from the lookout involved a semaphore system wherein raised wooden arms were angled to denote the type of vessel sailing in. The signal would be seen by a second station in the Presidio, and relayed on over the hills to Telegraph Hill, letting the downtown businesses know a ship was approaching, historian John Martini wrote in his 2009 essay. By 1927, when the Octagon House was built just up the hill from a previous lookout station, a telephone and radio system… CONTINUE READING…

I’ve been in the shelter for 7 years, today is my birthday and I’m still waiting for my foster parents to come and take me home ‎

Emma was a golden retriever, her coat once a radiant gold, now dulled by the harsh realities of shelter life. Seven years had passed since she’d arrived, a lifetime in the confines of a kennel. Today, her seventh birthday, was a stark reminder of her solitary existence. She remembered the day she was brought in, a young, hopeful dog full of life. But hope, like a balloon, had slowly deflated over time. The familiar scent of disinfectant, the echoing barks of her kennel mates, and the distant hum of the shelter had become her world. She’d watched countless dogs leave the shelter, their tails wagging with excitement as they embarked on new lives. Each departure was a bittersweet reminder of her own unchanging reality. People came and went, their eyes scanning the rows of kennels, searching for something, perhaps a puppy, or a dog that matched a specific image. But never her. She was too old, too ordinary in a world that craved novelty. As the day wore on, a sense of despair washed over her. She curled up in her kennel, her tail tucked between her legs. The world outside, with its promise of freedom and love, seemed a… CONTINUE READING…

A Dog Rescued from Being Collared and Tied to a Tree in Connecticut is Looking for a Loving Home ‎

On a seemingly ordinary day in April, a horrifying scene unfolded in the serene environment of a wildlife sanctuary in Connecticut. A Good Samaritan, out for a leisurely walk with their own  dog, stumbled upon a heart-wrenching discovery: a terrified, five-year-old canine named Obie, cruelly bound to a tree by his collar. The image of this innocent creature suffering in such a manner is both shocking and infuriating.  Dog Found Collared and Tied to a Tree in Connecticut Seeks a Loving Home A community rallies around Obie The dog walker immediately alerted authorities, and rescue efforts were swiftly initiated. Obie, traumatized and in desperate need of care, was promptly transported to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter (TRACS) for medical attention and rehabilitation. The community was outraged by this act of cruelty, and local law enforcement wasted no time in bringing the perpetrator to justice. A 26-year-old woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. As news of Obie’s plight spread, a wave of compassion washed over the community. Social media platforms became a hub for updates on the dog’s progress, and people from all walks of life followed his journey with keen interest. From his initial bath, which revealed the extent… CONTINUE READING…
