Clueless Tourists Get Shockingly Close to a Mama Grizzly and Cubs in Canada — Why Experts Warn Against This

Posted on July 15, 2025

A recent viral video captured in Waterton National Park, Canada, is sending shivers down the spines of wildlife experts — and not for the right reasons. In the clip, a group of seemingly clueless tourists approach dangerously close to a mama grizzly bear and her cubs, all while recording the encounter on their phones.

The Risk Behind the Footage

In the video, the tourists appear both excited and fascinated, eager to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment with the grizzlies. However, wildlife experts are quick to point out that this kind of behavior is reckless and could have turned deadly in an instant.

Grizzly bears, especially mothers with cubs, are extremely protective and unpredictable. Approaching them in the wild — particularly at such a close range — significantly increases the risk of an attack. What may seem like a peaceful scene can escalate without warning if the mother perceives a threat to her young.

The Grizzly Truth About Bear Safety

Parks Canada and wildlife organizations have repeatedly issued warnings about keeping a safe distance from bears and other wildlife. The recommended distance is at least 100 meters (328 feet) from bears. Getting too close not only endangers human lives but also puts wildlife at risk, as bears that become habituated to humans can face relocation or even euthanasia.

Furthermore, close encounters like these can stress the animals, disrupt their natural behaviors, and put their cubs at risk.

Why Do People Still Take the Risk?

Unfortunately, the desire for viral content and “epic” selfies often clouds judgment. In the age of social media, people sometimes prioritize likes and views over their own safety and the well-being of wildlife.

A Lesson for All

This video, while captivating, should serve as a stark reminder: wildlife is not entertainment. Observing bears and other creatures in their natural habitat is a privilege, but it must be done responsibly. Maintaining distance, staying in vehicles when necessary, and respecting nature’s boundaries are critical for the safety of both humans and animals.

Did You Know?

Approaching a grizzly in the wild is not just dangerous — in Canada and the U.S., it can actually be illegal under wildlife protection laws.
