Huehuetoca, State of Mexico – On the morning of Wednesday, November 20, a serious multi-vehicle collision took place on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway, at kilometer 059+000, near the Jorobas intersection in the municipality of Huehuetoca. The crash, which involved a large trailer and several smaller vehicles, has caused major traffic disruptions and sparked renewed discussion on road safety during adverse weather conditions.

Sequence of the Incident: What Happened

According to early reports from local authorities and the Guardia Nacional División Carreteras (National Highway Division), the accident occurred when a cargo trailer, traveling in the north-to-south direction toward Mexico City, was unable to brake in time as it approached slowing traffic near the Jorobas junction.

In its attempt to slow down, the trailer reportedly collided with the central road divider and then crashed into at least five passenger vehicles and a pickup truck. Witnesses at the scene described a moment of panic as the heavy vehicle lost control and careened through traffic, ultimately blocking all three southbound lanes of the highway.

The trailer came to rest perpendicular to the flow of traffic, fully obstructing the roadway and leading to a partial closure of the busy highway. Authorities responded quickly to the scene and rerouted traffic onto alternative lanes, but significant delays followed.

Weather Conditions May Have Contributed

Initial investigations suggest that wet road conditions, caused by persistent morning rain, may have played a contributing role in the driver’s inability to stop in time. Officials have not yet determined whether speed, mechanical failure, or driver fatigue were factors in the crash.

Drivers in nearby lanes reported poor visibility and slippery surfaces, which may have increased braking distances and reduced control. Authorities have confirmed that a full analysis will be conducted, including a review of the trailer’s braking system, logistics records, and the driver’s license and work hours.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Emergency medical services arrived promptly, including paramedics from the State Emergency Medical Service and volunteers from local rescue units. Several people sustained minor injuries, primarily from the impact and airbags, but no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were reported at the scene.

In total, seven individuals were treated for bruises, neck strain, and mild trauma. Two people were transported to nearby hospitals in Cuautitlán Izcalli as a precaution, while others were advised to seek follow-up care in the coming days in case of delayed symptoms.

Traffic Impact and Ongoing Delays

The accident resulted in an extended traffic jam that stretched several kilometers, affecting morning commuters and commercial transporters. The Federal Highway Police implemented a partial detour strategy, diverting vehicles through alternative access points and local roads, including Tepeji del Río and Zumpango, which led to congestion in those areas as well.

By mid-afternoon, one of the lanes had been partially cleared, allowing for limited vehicle movement, but full restoration of traffic flow was not expected until late evening. Tow trucks and cleanup crews were dispatched to remove debris and reposition the trailer, while road inspectors assessed damage to barriers and signage.

Public Safety Reminders and Official Statements

In light of the incident, the State of Mexico Department of Transportation has reminded drivers of the importance of:

  • Maintaining safe distances from other vehicles
  • Reducing speed during rain or fog
  • Performing regular vehicle maintenance, especially on brakes and tires
  • Avoiding distractions behind the wheel

An official from the National Civil Protection Coordination urged long-haul and freight drivers to adhere to federal guidelines on rest periods and cargo weight limits, which are frequently violated and can contribute to dangerous road conditions.

“We are grateful that no lives were lost in this incident,” said Carlos Ramírez, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Unit. “But this must serve as a reminder of how quickly a normal commute can turn into a life-threatening situation—especially under wet or slippery conditions.”

What Comes Next

The Guardia Nacional and local prosecutors have opened a formal investigation into the causes of the crash. The trailer driver is cooperating with authorities and has undergone preliminary toxicology testing, though results have not yet been made public.

Meanwhile, commuters are advised to:

  • Check for real-time traffic updates via the Caminos y Puentes Federales (CAPUFE) Twitter/X page and official apps
  • Avoid the Mexico-Querétaro Highway near Huehuetoca until authorities confirm the full reopening of all lanes
  • Drive with increased caution during the rainy season, especially in high-traffic corridors
