World Athletics has already introduced similar measures for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
Donald Trump has suggested that every woman competing at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles could be required to take a one-time sex test before being allowed to participate.
During the previous Olympic Games in Paris, major controversy erupted involving Algerian welterweight boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwanese featherweight fighter Lin Yu-ting, casting a shadow over the event.
Both athletes made headlines after securing gold in their respective divisions, each delivering impressive performances that included multiple knockdowns. Their victories, however, soon came under scrutiny.

It later came to light that the two boxers had previously been disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Championships held in New Delhi. The International Boxing Association (IBA), which at the time served as the global governing body for boxing, barred them due to reported failures in gender eligibility tests.

In an official release, the IBA claimed the athletes “did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognised test, whereby the specifics remain confidential”.
According to the organization, “This test conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.”

Even so, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later gave both fighters the green light to participate in the Paris Olympics. This decision came after the IOC had stripped the IBA of its authority in June 2023 due to concerns over poor governance.
To defend their stance, the IOC said “as with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport”

On Tuesday, during a press conference promoting the upcoming Olympics, President Trump was asked a rather complicated question touching on this ongoing debate.
At 79, Trump appears eager to take a front-facing role at the 2028 Games, much like he did during the Fifa Club World Cup, where he made several public appearances.

As the topic of gender testing continues to gain momentum, Trump used the press event to address the issue head-on. His remarks hinted at implementing stricter rules before the next Summer Olympics kick off in the U.S.

During the press conference, Trump declared that there would be a “very strong form of testing” leading up to the Games, although he didn’t go into detail about what that would look like.
A female journalist raised a pointed question, asking: “On transgender athletes in the Olympics, back to the safety, especially of female combat boxers.”
“Will the Department of Justice consider pressing charges against any man that tries to masquerade as a woman coming into this country to beat up American athletes?”
“And secondly, would your administration consider genetic testing so that these people can actually prove that they are actually women competing?”
Trump responded by saying: “Well, I think there is going to be a very strong form of testing.”
“As far as charges, I’d have to ask the Attorney General about that. I don’t know.”
“But there will be a very, very strong form of testing. And if the test doesn’t come out appropriately, they won’t be in the Olympics.”
In addition, Trump announced he would be forming a special White House task force, which he plans to lead personally. This group will oversee various aspects of the 2028 Olympics, which will mark the third time the Summer Games have been hosted in Los Angeles.
The last time the United States hosted a Summer Olympics was in Atlanta back in 1996. That year is especially memorable, as legendary boxer Muhammad Ali lit the Olympic flame.
Recently, World Athletics declared that every female athlete will be required to take a one-time genetic test before being eligible to compete in next month’s World Championships in Tokyo.
This testing will involve two non-invasive options — either a cheek swab or a blood sample — and will be used to verify whether athletes can compete in the women’s category at professional sports events.
These new rules are set to begin on September 1. They include a “once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene”, which is widely accepted as a reliable indicator for identifying biological sex.
British Olympic stars like Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell are among those who will need to complete the test before the Championships begin in Tokyo on September 13.
The announcement has sparked debate around the world. Some see it as a necessary step to protect fairness in women’s sports, while others raise concerns about privacy and discrimination.
Supporters argue that clear rules help ensure all athletes are on a level playing field. But critics warn that such testing may target specific individuals or groups unfairly, especially in cases where gender identity or biological variation complicates the picture.

As the 2028 Olympics approach, more countries and sports organizations are expected to weigh in on the topic. With global attention now focused on athlete eligibility and fairness in competition, the next few years may bring even more changes to the way international sports are governed.
Ultimately, how these new testing rules are implemented — and who enforces them — will shape not only the Olympic Games but also the future of gender policies in professional athletics.
