Tragic Highway Collision Claims 19 Lives in State of Mexico

What began as a typical Wednesday morning drive on the Mexico–Querétaro Highway ended in one of the most serious traffic incidents in recent memory for the municipality of Huehuetoca, State of Mexico. At approximately kilometer 59, northbound traffic was flowing steadily under cool, clear skies. Commuters, long-distance travelers, buses, and cargo trucks shared the lanes, framed by the distant silhouette of the Sierra mountain range. That routine scene shifted abruptly when a large freight trailer, heavily loaded and moving at high speed, encountered slowing traffic ahead. Early accounts from people nearby indicate that the driver may have experienced brake trouble. With little room to maneuver and traffic densely packed, the vehicle was unable to come to a complete stop in time. What followed was a series of impacts that involved multiple cars and commercial vehicles along the highway’s three lanes.
