Shell Pile: A Forgotten Fishing Village Once a bustling oyster hub on the Maurice River in Cumberland County, Shell Pile got its name from towering heaps of oyster shells outside seafood packing sheds. In the 1930s, it was home to around 1,000 Black residents living in barracks on stilts over the salt marshes — a community described in a 1939 WPA guidebook as insular and wary of outsiders. By 1955, the oyster industry was booming. But in 1957, a disease known as MSX wiped out 90% of local oysters and clams, decimating the region’s economy. Today, the Shell Pile area… CONTINUE READING…

I SMASHED A STRANGER’S CAR WINDOW TO SAVE A DOG — AND THEN SOMETHING COMPLETELY

As the man stormed toward me, his fury was palpable. His finger jabbed the air in my direction as he shouted, “What do you think you’re doing?” The crowd that had started to gather around us was tense, anticipation crackling in the oppressive heat. Her voice wavered as she struggled to find the right words. “That man is your grandfather.” I sank into my couch, trying to process what I’d just heard. My grandfather? The mysterious, generous man who had been tipping me $100 every Sunday? I had so many questions. Why hadn’t she told me about him? Why was he at Denny’s, quietly sipping coffee and leaving generous tips? Why didn’t he ever say anything? “Mom, I don’t understand. How is this possible?” I finally asked, my mind racing with confusion and curiosity. She sighed deeply, a sound filled with memories and old… CONTINUE READING…
