Their acne is severe

Acne is a common skin condition that affects people of all ages, but there are times when it can become more than just an occasional breakout. For some, acne develops into painful, deep lesions that do not respond to over-the-counter treatments. In such cases, consulting a dermatologist is not just helpful—it’s necessary.

A person should see a dermatologist if they have cysts, nodules, or deep, painful acne. These types of blemishes often indicate severe acne, which can lead to permanent scarring if left untreated. Unlike surface-level pimples, cysts and nodules form deep beneath the skin and often require prescription medications such as antibiotics, hormonal treatments, or isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane) to control inflammation and prevent future breakouts.

It’s also important to seek professional help if you experience late-onset or persistent acne.

  • Late-onset acne occurs when breakouts appear for the first time in adulthood, often in the 20s, 30s, or even later. Hormonal changes, stress, or certain medications can trigger this form of acne, and it may require a different approach than teenage acne.
  • Persistent acne, on the other hand, refers to acne that continues from adolescence into adulthood. Even if it seemed to improve for a time, recurring breakouts could signal an underlying hormonal imbalance, excessive oil production, or other skin conditions that need medical attention.

A dermatologist can perform an in-depth evaluation to determine the root cause of your acne. They can recommend a personalized treatment plan, which may include topical retinoids, oral medications, hormonal therapy, or professional procedures like chemical peels and laser therapy. Dermatologists can also help reduce the risk of scarring and pigmentation by addressing acne early and effectively.

Additionally, you should consider seeing a dermatologist if:

  • Your acne causes emotional distress or affects your confidence.
  • Over-the-counter products and home remedies haven’t worked after several weeks.
  • You notice acne developing on unusual areas, such as your chest, back, or shoulders, and it becomes painful or inflamed.

Remember, acne is a medical condition—and there’s no need to suffer in silence. Dermatologists are trained to identify what’s causing your breakouts and guide you toward clearer, healthier skin. Early intervention not only improves appearance but also helps prevent long-term skin damage.
