While Cleaning My Old House, I Came Upon These Items—Can You Help Me Identify Them?

Posted on October 24, 2025October 24, 2025 By sg4vo No Comments on While Cleaning My Old House, I Came Upon These Items—Can You Help Me Identify Them?

There’s something both nostalgic and eerie about cleaning out an old house—especially one you’ve lived in for years. The familiar creaks of the floorboards, the dust in the air, and the strange, almost magical feeling of uncovering forgotten treasures.

While cleaning out the attic or rummaging through old boxes, I stumbled upon a handful of items that looked oddly familiar. They weren’t things I remembered buying or using recently, but there they were—hidden away, waiting to be discovered. Each one seemed to tell its own story, but I couldn’t quite remember what story that was.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of me. Could they be antiques? Childhood relics? Or were they part of a larger mystery I’d forgotten over the years? After staring at the collection for a while, I decided to get some help in identifying these objects. Here’s what I found. See if any of these ring a bell for you!

1. A Small, Round, Metal Disc with Holes

At first glance, I thought it was just a random washer or some kind of industrial part. But upon closer inspection, the size and design seemed deliberate. There were a few faint markings around the edges, and the metal had an oddly smooth yet worn texture. The holes were perfectly symmetrical, like they were meant to interlock with something else.

What Could It Be?
This could be a vintage button from an old sewing machine, or perhaps part of a mechanical tool. Another possibility is that it’s an antique coin from a different country—especially if the markings are symbols instead of numbers. The type of metal and wear could provide clues. Was this part of a machine or a keepsake?

2. A Rectangular Wooden Box with a Glass Lid

This one immediately caught my attention because it looked like something you’d see in an old-fashioned pharmacy or apothecary shop. The wood was dark and weathered, but the glass lid was still surprisingly clear. Inside, I could see what appeared to be small, colored beads or dried flowers arranged in neat rows.

What Could It Be?
This could be a vintage herbal medicine box or a case for old perfume vials. The tiny compartments are often used to store individual herbs, dried flowers, or tiny trinkets. It could also be a collector’s item, designed for keeping buttons, stamps, or other small, valuable items. Or, it might just be a display case for something ornamental.

3. A Strange, Spiral-Shaped Object

This one had me stumped for a while. It was made of a thin, flexible metal that twisted into a perfect spiral. The object was no longer shiny, but rather had a dull, tarnished look. It didn’t appear to have any purpose when I first looked at it, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was important.

What Could It Be?
This could be an old spring from a pocket watch or a piece of machinery. Alternatively, it might be part of an old electrical device or even a part of a decorative antique. If it’s from a pocket watch, the spiral shape would indicate a spring mechanism used to wind or power the watch. If it’s from a machine, it might have been part of the internal workings.

4. A Framed Photograph of a Family, Handwritten Names on the Back

This one was the most surprising discovery. Behind a layer of dust, I found a small, oval-framed photograph of a smiling family standing in front of what appeared to be a house—perhaps one from the early 1900s. On the back of the frame was a list of names in delicate cursive writing. I couldn’t recognize any of the names, but they seemed to belong to a different generation.

What Could It Be?
It could be a photo of distant relatives, maybe even ancestors you never met. The handwriting on the back could indicate a family reunion, a wedding, or a group photo from a special occasion. If it’s from a different time period, it might be a collector’s item for genealogy enthusiasts. Alternatively, this could be a random photograph left behind by a previous tenant or owner of the house, which makes it a piece of local history.

5. A Vintage, Leather-Bound Journal with Brass Clasps

When I first picked this one up, I assumed it was just an old diary. The leather was soft yet stiff, and the brass clasps were intricate but faded. What surprised me, though, was the lack of any writing on the inside pages. Instead, the pages were filled with beautifully detailed sketches of what appeared to be botanical plants—each drawn with meticulous care.

What Could It Be?
This could be an old botanical field journal, perhaps used by a botanist or herbalist to document different species of plants. The fact that it was leather-bound and locked with brass clasps points to it being a personal possession of someone important or wealthy during its time. It may also be a decorative journal used by an artist to keep their sketches and ideas. This could be a valuable item if it’s historically significant, so it might be worth looking into its origins.

6. A Small, Intricate Porcelain Figurine

This little item looked like something you might find in a cabinet of fine china. It was a small, porcelain figurine of a woman, holding a flower in her hand. The details were so delicate, and the colors had faded in some spots. The figurine had no markings or labels, which left me wondering about its origins.

What Could It Be?
Given the craftsmanship and design, this could be a piece of antique European porcelain, possibly from the late 19th or early 20th century. It could be part of a larger collection of figurines, such as those made by companies like Royal Worcester, Meissen, or Limoges. Without markings, it’s hard to pinpoint, but the style suggests it was a decorative piece—likely from a collector’s set or a gift. It might also be worth investigating whether it has any historical or cultural significance.

The Mystery Unveiled

While these items didn’t immediately bring back specific memories, they certainly raised more questions than answers. Cleaning out an old house is like opening a time capsule, and each item tells its own story. Whether they’re from a previous owner, distant relatives, or just forgotten keepsakes, each object holds a little piece of the past.

Now, I’m left with the task of figuring out their true origin—and maybe even sharing them with someone who can appreciate their history.

If you recognize any of these items or have your own experience with a strange discovery, feel free to share your thoughts. Who knows—maybe together, we can piece together the mystery of these objects and their hidden stories!
