Found Dozens of Mysterious Rusty Metal Objects on a River Beach — What Are They?

small, pointed metal objects scattered in the sand. They were rusty brown with hints of green, magnetic, and had no markings. At first glance, I had no idea what they could be.

Naturally, I turned to the internet for answers. Some Reddit users suggested they might be slide stop plungers for pistols, specifically old 1911 models. One theory was that they were leftovers from a military installation — discarded when the 1911 was no longer standard issue.

However, a closer look by enthusiasts and mechanics revealed some inconsistencies:

  • The pointed, terraced ends of these objects didn’t quite match typical slide stop plungers.
  • They were heavier and larger than those used in handguns.

While wandering along a river beach recently, I stumbled upon something strange — dozens of small, pointed metal objects scattered in the sand.

Then, another user suggested they might actually be Cleco temporary fasteners, older versions of the small, pointed clamps sheet metal workers use to hold pieces together temporarily before permanent riveting or welding.

This explanation makes sense, considering:

  • Clecos are magnetic and often made of steel.
  • They can develop rust and green patina when exposed to the elements.
  • They’re small, pointed, and reusable, which matches the objects found.

Sheet metal mechanics and hobbyists confirmed that these objects closely resemble vintage Cleco fasteners, which explains why someone might find a handful of them dumped or lost near a riverbank — perhaps from old construction, boat repair, or discarded hobby projects.

While the origin is still a bit mysterious, the consensus leans toward them being old sheet metal tools rather than military hardware.

It’s wild how a handful of rusty little things in the sand can spark such curiosity and internet sleuthing. Have you ever stumbled across strange metal objects like these? Share your stories — you never know what hidden history might be buried under a few inches of sand.
