Former President Donald Trump has emphasized the need to eliminate cashless bail as part of a broader Republican crime package. Speaking with The Daily Signal, Trump blamed the rise in violent crime on policies that allow suspects to be released without bail, calling it a “disaster” that enables repeat offenders to harm others while awaiting trial.
Trump is collaborating with Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, on what he calls a “Comprehensive Crime Bill.” He stated that the legislation is urgently needed and will focus on reversing Democratic policies that he argues have contributed to spikes in crime across the nation.
Planning for this crime bill began over the summer. Reports indicate that the Justice Department has already met with Republican staffers to draft potential provisions. Trump has made law-and-order a key part of his political platform, frequently criticizing what he views as leniency from Democratic officials.
Highlighting his recent actions in Washington, D.C., Trump referenced his 30-day federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department as a major success. He claimed that violent crime has dropped significantly since the intervention and praised the transformation of the city into what he now calls a “safe city.”
Trump also criticized former D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb for opposing his decision to deploy the National Guard and take direct control of local law enforcement. He framed the lawsuit against him as an attempt to return the city to high-crime conditions, despite what he described as record-low crime rates during his intervention.
With the 30-day order set to expire on September 10, Trump suggested he may seek an extension or declare a national emergency if Congress does not act. He remains confident that his efforts will produce lasting change in public safety.
