Bullying is a serious issue that should never be tolerated in any setting—whether it’s at school, in the workplace, or at home. It’s a harmful behavior that not only affects the victims but also damages the fabric of our communities. Everyone who witnesses bullying has a responsibility to do their part to stop it as early as possible. Addressing bullying promptly is crucial because the longer it goes unchecked, the more damage it can cause—not only to those targeted but also to the bullies themselves, who often act out due to their own insecurities and unresolved issues.

Children and teenagers who bully others are frequently struggling with their own fears, anxieties, or lack of self-confidence. With guidance, education, and support, many of these young people can learn empathy and kindness, steering away from destructive behaviors before they become deeply ingrained habits. On the other hand, it takes courage and integrity for bystanders to intervene when they see someone being harassed or intimidated. Unfortunately, many people choose to look the other way, unwilling to get involved out of fear or indifference.

Thankfully, there are inspiring examples of young people who do choose to stand up for what’s right, showing compassion and bravery when it matters most. One such story comes from Lincoln Middle School in Wisconsin, where three teenagers—Scooter Terrien, Chase Vasquez, and Miles Rodriguez—made a powerful stand against bullying. Although they might seem like typical middle school students, their actions revealed their exceptional character. Their friend, Desiree Andrews, is a vibrant and determined young girl with Down syndrome. Despite the challenges she faces, Desiree expresses herself beautifully through dance and music. As a member of the cheerleading team, she enthusiastically supports the school’s sports teams, cheering loudly from the sidelines. However, not everyone was kind. On one occasion during a basketball game, a group of bullies began mocking and heckling Desiree, trying to undermine her spirit.

Scooter, Chase, and Miles quickly noticed what was happening. Rather than ignore the bullying, they took time to observe carefully, making sure they understood the situation fully before stepping in. Once they confirmed the bullying, the three friends decided they could not stand by and watch their friend be targeted. During a timeout in the game, they left the bench and calmly approached the bullies, letting them know that such behavior was unacceptable. Their intervention, witnessed by the entire school, sent a clear message that bullying would not be tolerated. The bullies were confronted and taught an important lesson about respect and kindness. Although this act of courage might seem small to some, its impact was profound for Desiree and her family.

Desiree’s father was deeply moved by the support his daughter received. Fighting back tears, he expressed his heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I just wanted to let them know, as a father, how much I appreciated it.” Moments like these remind us all of the power of kindness and standing up for those who need us most.

Stories like Desiree’s and her friends’ courage restore faith in humanity. They highlight the difference that empathy and action can make in the lives of young people, showing that even in the face of cruelty, compassion can shine through. If more people had the bravery to intervene as Scooter, Chase, and Miles did, the world would be a much safer and kinder place for everyone.
