The White House orders Smithsonian museums to revise exhibits to align with Trump’s perspective on US history

Donald Trump Directs Smithsonian to Align Exhibits with His Vision of American History. In a significant move that has drawn national attention, former President Donald Trump has instructed the Smithsonian Institution to review and revise its museum exhibits to better reflect his vision of American history. This directive comes in the wake of an executive order issued by Trump in March 2025, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which emphasizes the need to promote a more “unifying and patriotic” narrative across federally funded cultural institutions.

A formal letter sent by the White House to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch called for the removal of content deemed “divisive” or “ideologically driven,” encouraging instead the inclusion of language that is described as “unifying, historically accurate, and celebratory of America’s founding values.” The administration requested that the Smithsonian submit an initial report within 30 days, outlining current exhibits, educational materials, and curatorial practices, with recommendations for adjustments in line with the executive order.

The Smithsonian Institution, which oversees 21 museums, the National Zoo, and multiple research centers, responded by reaffirming its commitment to academic integrity, scholarly excellence, and historically accurate storytelling. While officials acknowledged receipt of the letter and agreed to conduct a review as requested, they emphasized that the institution’s curatorial decisions have always been based on rigorous historical research and peer-reviewed scholarship, not political agendas.

This development follows recent controversy at the National Museum of American History, where curators quietly removed a temporary label referencing Trump’s two impeachments. Although Smithsonian representatives described the removal as part of a routine update, critics argue that the decision reflects increasing political pressure on historical institutions to sanitize or revise contentious aspects of modern history.

Historians and cultural commentators have voiced strong concerns, warning that the executive order could open the door to political interference in historical interpretation. They argue that rewriting or reshaping historical exhibits to reflect a political viewpoint undermines the independence of public institutions and threatens the public’s trust in museum accuracy.

Despite the White House framing the initiative as an effort to present a more balanced and patriotic view of history ahead of the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, opponents fear the initiative prioritizes ideology over evidence. As a result, the debate over this directive has sparked a broader national conversation about historical truth, institutional autonomy, and the role of museums in preserving collective memory.

The Smithsonian’s full response, and any changes made to comply with the order, are expected to become clearer in the coming months as the review process unfolds.
