June 28, 2025 | Gary, SD –
A powerful tornado tore through Gary, South Dakota on Saturday, leaving behind a trail of destruction and shocking residents with its sudden intensity.
Witnesses say the storm moved in quickly, giving little warning before high winds ripped apart homes, barns, and trees. Several houses sustained severe roof and structural damage, while outbuildings were flattened in minutes.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as debris littered the streets, and power outages were reported across the area. Fortunately, as of early reports, no fatalities have been confirmed, though multiple families have been displaced and cleanup efforts are now underway.
“It sounded like a freight train,” one resident recalled. “We barely had time to get to the basement before everything started shaking.”
Meteorologists are continuing to survey the damage to determine the tornado’s strength and path. Residents are urged to stay cautious as scattered storms remain in the forecast.
For now, Gary is beginning the long road to recovery, with neighbors and volunteers already stepping in to help those who lost their homes.
