Understanding Acne (Acne Vulgaris): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Posted on August 26, 2025August 26, 2025 By sg4vo No Comments on Understanding Acne (Acne Vulgaris): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Acne, also known medically as acne vulgaris, is a chronic skin condition that commonly affects people of all ages, particularly adolescents and young adults. It develops when dead skin cells and the skin’s natural oils (sebum) clog the hair follicles, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. This often leads to inflammation, redness, and the formation of various types of blemishes.

What Causes Acne?

Acne forms when several factors combine within the skin:

  • Excess oil production: The sebaceous glands produce too much oil, which mixes with dead skin cells.
  • Clogged hair follicles: Dead skin cells do not shed properly and accumulate in the follicles, leading to blockages.
  • Bacterial growth: A bacteria known as Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) can grow in the clogged pores, causing inflammation.
  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones, especially during puberty, menstruation, or due to medical conditions like PCOS, can trigger acne flare-ups.

Common Types of Acne Lesions

Acne can appear in different forms, depending on the severity and cause:

  • Whiteheads (closed clogged pores)
  • Blackheads (open clogged pores)
  • Papules (small red, tender bumps)
  • Pustules (pimples with pus)
  • Nodules (large, painful lumps beneath the surface)
  • Cysts (deep, pus-filled lesions that can scar)

Who Gets Acne?

While acne is most common during adolescence due to increased hormone activity, it can affect people well into adulthood. Adult acne is especially prevalent among women and may be linked to hormonal imbalances, stress, or cosmetic products.

Treatment Options

Effective treatment depends on the severity of the acne. Common treatments include:

  • Topical treatments: Such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids, and antibiotics.
  • Oral medications: Including antibiotics, birth control pills (for hormonal acne), or isotretinoin (for severe cases).
  • Lifestyle changes: Maintaining a gentle skincare routine, avoiding oily cosmetics, managing stress, and eating a balanced diet can support skin health.
  • Professional treatments: Dermatologists may recommend chemical peels, laser therapy, or drainage procedures for severe or persistent acne.

Can Acne Be Prevented?

While acne may not always be preventable, the risk of breakouts can be reduced by:

  • Washing your face twice daily with a mild cleanser
  • Avoiding harsh scrubs and over-washing
  • Keeping hair and hands off your face
  • Choosing non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products
  • Managing stress and hormonal fluctuations when possible

Conclusion

Acne vulgaris is a common, manageable skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While it can be frustrating and sometimes painful, understanding its causes and the available treatments can help reduce its impact and restore skin confidence. If over-the-counter treatments don’t work, consult a dermatologist for a personalized care plan.
