James C. Flood Mansion

The James C. Flood Mansion is a historic mansion at 1000 California Street, atop Nob Hill in San Francisco, California, USA. Now home of the Pacific-Union Club, it was built in 1886 as the townhouse for James C. Flood, a 19th-century silver baron. It was the first brownstone building west of the Mississippi River, and the only mansion on Nob Hill to structurally survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Description and history The Flood Mansion occupies an entire city block on Nob Hill, bounded by California, Cushman, Mason, and Sacramento Streets. The block is fenced on three sides by bronze fencing installed at the time of the mansion’s construction. It is a large masonry structure, three stories in height, its exterior finished in brownstone quarried in Portland, Connecticut and shipped around Cape Horn. It is an elaborate expression of Classical Revival architecture, with corner quoining, a balustraded roof edge, and windows framed by pilasters and elaborate pediments. The main entrance, facing California Street, is sheltered by a broad and deep three-bay portico supported by clustered square columns. The mansion was built by James C. Flood, who made his fortune in the silver mines of Nevada. His inspiration for the building were the Gilded Age mansions he saw on the East Coast of… CONTINUE READING…

Another Terrible Loss For The Bryant Family, Sending Prayers

Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, father of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and former NBA player, has died at 69. La Salle University, where Bryant played and coached, expressed that he “was a beloved member of the Explorer family and will be dearly missed.” Fran Dunphy, La Salle’s head coach, mentioned Bryant had recently suffered a severe stroke. Since Kobe Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in January 2020, Joe Bryant had rarely appeared publicly. Kobe once praised his father’s basketball acumen, saying Joe taught him “from an early age how to view the game, how to prepare for the game and how to execute.” Joe Bryant was a standout at La Salle University, averaging 20.8 points per game. Drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1975, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers and other NBA teams. The 76ers acknowledged his impact: “Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant was a local basketball icon.” Doug Young, a former teammate of Kobe, remembered Joe as an exemplary “role model,” noting, “He made basketball fun and made us all want to be better.” Joe Bryant later coached at various levels, including the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. Arn Tellem, Kobe’s former agent, said, “Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant was a true… CONTINUE READING…

Pax Jolie-Pitt, 20-year-old son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, is recovering in the hospital after a bike accident in Los Angeles. The incident occurred on Monday, July 29, around 5 p.m. on Los Feliz Boulevard during rush hour. Pax was riding his electric bicycle when he collided with the rear end of a stationary vehicle at a red light. Witnesses saw the driver immediately checking on Pax’s well-being before police and emergency responders arrived. Pax, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a hip injury and a head injury that required immediate medical attention. Initially, medics were concerned about a “possible minor brain bleed,” but Pax is now in stable condition and may head home soon. Pax is the fourth of Angelina and Brad’s six children. The Jolie-Pitt family remains in the spotlight as Angelina and Brad’s contentious divorce continues, over seven years after their split. The ongoing custody battle has strained relationships within the family. In 2020, Pax openly criticized his father on Instagram, intensifying the feud. Breakfast

Yeehaw Breakfast Casserole A hearty breakfast! When feeding a crowd, a breakfast casserole is hard to beat. No standing at the stove flipping pancakes while everyone else eats or coordinating a complicated spread, just a whole lot of yummy food in one big dish. I have quite a few breakfast casseroles in my recipe collection alredy, but when I saw this Yeehaw Breakfast Bake I knew I had to give it a try! With juicy breakfast sausage and sweet cornbread, this is not your typical egg bake! You will need pre baked cornbread for this recipe so you’ll want to either bake a batch up ahead of time or grab some from the baked goods section at the store. The cornbread is sliced into cubes and then tossed with browned breakfast sausage, cheese, and some colorful bell pepper. A mixture of eggs, milk, salsa verde, and seasoning is then mixed in to hold it all together. Your casserole will bake for about 40-45 minutes or until the top is starting to turn crisp and golden brown. Load each slice up with your favorite toppings like sour cream and sauce or enjoy it as it. Trust me, it’s already packed with… CONTINUE READING…

Cheesy Jalapeño Shortbread

Posted on August 2, 2024August 2, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Cheesy Jalapeño Shortbread

These are dangerously snackable. You might think of sweet, crumbly cookies when you think of shortbread, but they can be savory as well. Personally I have been a connoisseur of shortbread my whole life, so when I saw this recipe for cheesy jalapeño shortbread I knew this was going to be made in my kitchen ASAP. And, these piquant little drops of heaven did not disappoint. This shortbread relies on the time-tested combination of jalapeño and cheese. Even before these went into the oven the aroma of the peppers and cheddar together had my interest. The freshness of the jalapeños is the perfect compliment to the rich, buttery shortbread and the cheese. For this recipe I used sharp (orange) cheddar but you can use white cheddar, pepper jack, Monterey jack, or Irish cheddar. The addition of young cheese does add quite a bit of moisture to the dough, as does the fresh jalapeño and 1 egg. Because of this extra water in the mix this shortbread isn’t dry and crumbly. Instead, there is a slight chew to these biscuits (as the English might call them) that makes them extremely addictive. To begin making this recipe you’ll need to cut in… CONTINUE READING…

Broccoli Cauliflower Cheese Soup

Posted on August 2, 2024August 2, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Broccoli Cauliflower Cheese Soup

An indulgent cheddar soup, with something a little extra. I used to not like soup. Any kind of soup. At all. But Broccoli Cheddar Soup changed that. Maybe that’s because Broccoli Cheddar Soup is more like digging in to a bowl full of cheese than a brothy Minestrone, but it changed everything for me. I love soup now, and I especially love this one — Broccoli Cauliflower Cheese Soup. Like its broccoli-cheddar cousin, it’s plenty cheesy and indulgent, but this one is also full of flavorful veggies to keep things balanced in both taste and texture. Cauliflower may be mild, but it’s a great addition here — it adds a touch of sweetness and a subtle nutty flavor, but it still lets that cheddar shine. There is a time and a place for Velveeta but it’s not here. With flour, a combination of stock and half and half, and a good melting cheddar, you can get the ideal creamy-cheesy texture you want for a cheese soup. Chicken or vegetable stock works fine. You’ll also want an onion, some garlic, a carrot, about a head each of broccoli and cauliflower florets, some Dijon mustard, and two cups of grated cheddar. (Mild, medium, or sharp is… CONTINUE READING…

Kamala Harris secures enough delegates to be Democratic nominee, campaign says Who will Harris choose as her running mate? As Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to announce her running mate for the 2024 election, political expert Mark Shanahan joined LiveNOW from FOX’s Josh Breslow to discuss the possibilities. Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough votes from delegates to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. She’ll be the first woman of color at the top of a major party’s ticket.  “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee,” Harris said on a call with supporters. “We have a lot of work to do. It’s good work.” Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced the news Friday. Although the online voting process doesn’t end until Monday, Harris crossed the threshold she needed on Friday.  Her formal nomination is expected to be finalized by Aug. 7, though the party’s convention in Chicago isn’t scheduled to begin until Aug. 19. Democratic officials have said the accelerated timeline was necessary because of an Aug. 7 deadline to ensure candidates appear on the Ohio ballot. Butter Pecan Pound Cake

Posted on August 2, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Butter Pecan Pound Cake

Butter, vanilla and pecans, what more could you want?? There’s a time and place for pillowy desserts that are light as air…and this is neither the time nor the place. This butter pecan pound cake is a dense, but delicious loaf that is just as delicious when dipped into your morning coffee as it is when served as dessert. You may have thought you couldn’t muster another bite, but once you lay eyes on this cake, there’s no point resisting; it’s just too good. With five eggs in it and a cup of butter, it’s no wonder this stuff is dense! But just because it’s hefty, doesn’t mean it’s heavy. The butter gives it plenty of flavor – important, considering this is a butter pecan cake, after all – along with brown sugar for a deeper quality and added moisture, so it doesn’t dry out. To that, you’ll add a tablespoon (yes, tablespoon) of vanilla extract. A teaspoon won’t do here, as you want the taste to knock everyone’s socks off and the vanilla pairs beautifully with the butter and pecans. Finally, you’re going to want to use buttermilk here to keep things moist. Buttermilk doesn’t add any flavor, it’s… CONTINUE READING…

Custard-Filled Polish Paczki

Posted on August 2, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Custard-Filled Polish Paczki

Pączki is a Polish pastry, not too far off from a doughnut. It’s deep fried dough filled with a cream or sweet jelly. They can be glazed or covered with a powdered sugar. They are typically eaten on Pączki Day in Poland, also known as Fat Tuesday, because their consumption was forbidden by the Catholic fasting practices during Lent. You’ll see celebrations of Pączki Day in US cities with large Polish populations like Buffalo, Detroit, and Chicago. Hamtramck, MI even has an annual Pączki Day parade! So how can you celebrate Pączki day with your own treats? Well we have a great recipe right here. It turns out one secret to making these delicious treats is to add some grain alcohol to the batter which according to some prevents the dough from absorbing quite as much oil. We filled these pączkis with a custard filling, but if you’d prefer something more fruity, use 1 1/2 cups of your favorite preserves instead. Simone Biles takes apparent swipe at Donald Trump: ‘I love my black job’

Simone Biles takes apparent swipe at Donald Trump: ‘I love my black job’

Simone Biles appeared to take a dig at Donald Trump on social media in response to the former president’s “Black jobs” remark. “I love my black job,” the Olympic gold medalist posted on X, formerly Twitter, in response to a post from singer Ricky Davila, who had said: “Iconic photo of the GOAT mastering her black job and collecting Gold Medals.” Trump made headlines for the “Black job” comment when he appeared at the National Association of Black Journalists conference this week.  When pressed by moderators at the journalism convention to elaborate on what personified a “Black job,” the Republican presidential candidate told attendees that “a Black job is anybody that has a job,” resulting in groans from the audience. Trump received criticism from some for arguing during his televised debate with President Joe Biden in June that migrants are taking “Black jobs” and “Hispanic jobs” from Americans.  Biles got into the social media exchange after she defeated Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade to win the all-around Paris Olympics gymnastics finals on Thursday, claiming her ninth gold medal. At 27, Biles is the oldest Olympic women’s gymnastics champion since 1952, per the AP.
