Upsetting images of an emaciated elephant forced to join a 10-day parade in Sri Lanka sparked outrage back in 2019. Many people signed a petition calling for an end to this animal cruelty — but what many might not know is what happened afterward. Photos of the Sri Lankan elephant lying on the ground, frail and near death with her bones clearly showing through her skin, shocked the world when they first surfaced six years ago. The 70-year-old elephant, named Tikiiri, was forced to wear a costume during a Buddhist festival, so her protruding ribs wouldn’t be visible. Tikiiri joined 60 other elephants and was forced to walk many miles each evening despite her frail health. The starving elephant would also work alongside dancers, jugglers, fire-breathers and musicians. The shocking images were shared worldwide, and thousands of people signed a petition demanding change. After what started out as harmless fun digging in the sand, nine-year-old Maddox was fighting for his life in the hospital and seven-year-old Sloan died. To get away from the winter cold, the Mattingly family, who were from Fort Wayne, Indiana, went on vacation. On February 20, Sloan and Maddox unintentionally went into a big sand hole while playing close to their parents. The sand suddenly fell away from them. Onlookers witnessed desperate digging efforts to save the kids and heard screams. A child who was stuck in the sand was reported to 911 by a beachgoer. As the sand engulfed Sloan, the children’s mother screamed for help, and their father quickly sought help. When emergency personnel arrived, they dug the kids out with shovels and used support boards to stabilize the sand. They tried, but Sloan did not make it.
