Barbra Streisand: A Powerful Voice for Democracy

Standing Firm for Democracy at 81 Barbra Streisand, the iconic singer and actor, is no stranger to controversy. At the age of 81, she continues to use her powerful voice to speak out against what she believes is a threat to democracy. Streisand’s latest target is former president Donald Trump, and she is making it clear that she won’t stick around if he becomes president again in 2024. Streisand’s Dislike for Trump Streisand has been a long-time Democratic supporter and fundraiser and has never been shy about expressing her dislike of Trump. She has called him “so stupid” and “ill-informed,” branding him “the Liar in Chief, the Groper in Chief.” In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, she boldly declared, “I can’t live in this country if he becomes president.” But this isn’t the first time Streisand has made such a dramatic declaration. Like many other celebrities, she vowed to leave the United States after Trump won in 2016. At that time, she quipped, “America was great – before you were elected.” Expressing Frustration Through Music Streisand’s frustration with Trump led her to release her 36th album, “Walls,” in 2018. This musical masterpiece serves as a homage to Trump’s tyranny… CONTINUE READING…

Japan’s abandoned houses wipe $25bn off nearby property value

TOKYO — Long-abandoned homes in Japan are bringing down the values of surrounding properties, with losses reaching 3.9 trillion yen ($24.7 billion) over the five years through 2023, new calculations show. The large sum underscores the scale of a problem that is fueling a vicious cycle of plummeting prices and more unsold properties. The data was compiled by the Japan Akiya Consortium, which brings together 14 companies and a research institution to tackle the problem of abandoned homes — or akiya in Japanese. The figures were based on 2023 government statistics and research by the Center for Real Estate Innovation at the University of Tokyo.  The number of abandoned homes that are not for sale or available for rent but have remained empty for a long period of time increased by around 360,000 units between 2018 and 2023 to about 3.85 million units. More than 70% of these were detached, single-family houses. In many cases, land prices within a 50-meter radius of abandoned homes were on a downward trend, the consortium’s research found. Potential causes include a decrease in the number of people looking to move in due to concerns about vegetation overgrowth, pests and public safety. An estimated 80% of the single-family houses that became abandoned… CONTINUE READING…

Heroic dog saves owner from mountain lion attack: ‘My dog is my hero’

The unassuming beauty of the Trinity County, California countryside belied the lurking danger that would soon unfold. Erin Wilson, a resident of the area, was enjoying a tranquil afternoon with her beloved Belgian Malinois, Eva. The pair were engaged in a leisurely walk along the riverbank, a routine they had shared countless times before. Little did they know, this idyllic moment would soon transform into a harrowing ordeal that would test their bond to its limits. Eva’s heroic intervention As they strolled along the river’s edge, their peaceful reverie was abruptly shattered by the sound of a ferocious roar. A mountain lion, its eyes gleaming with predatory intent, emerged from the undergrowth and charged at Erin. In the blink of an eye, the tranquil scene descended into chaos. The big cat, driven by instinct, lunged at Erin, its powerful claws raking her jacket and leaving her terrified and vulnerable. Faced with this terrifying situation, Erin’s survival instinct kicked in. With no one else around to come to her aid, she instinctively called out to Eva. The loyal companion, sensing her owner’s distress, immediately sprang into action. Without hesitation, Eva confronted the menacing mountain lion, her small frame a stark contrast… CONTINUE READING…

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Blake Shelton and his family for their tragic loss

Blake Shelton wrote a touching tribute to his friend Joe Bonsall after his death. From 1973 to 2024, Joe played in the country and gospel band The Oak Ridge Boys. The 48-year-old Blake shared a picture of himself singing on stage with The Oak Ridge Boys on Tuesday. No one knows for sure when and where the picture was taken. “I’m so sad to hear about the death of my friend Joe Bonsall,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories. “I’ve NEVER seen Joe when he wasn’t smiling and completely full of life.” Blake went on, “He loved singing more than anyone I’ve ever met.” “His family and his @theoakridgeboys brothers are in my thoughts and prayers.” Today we lost a very important person. Blake put out the song “Doing It to Country Songs” with The Oak Ridge Boys in 2016. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, led to his death. Fans found out about the singer’s diagnosis in January 2024, four years after he had been sick. His wife was named Mary Ann, and he had two daughters named Jennifer and Sabrina. He also had two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A family spokesperson said in a… CONTINUE READING…

Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars

Posted on August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars

The blender makes easy work of this easy peasy silky-smooth dessert bar. I’m not here to put up an argument that cheesecake isn’t amazing, but the thing about it is that it can be kind of fussy, what with the water bath baking and all. But do you know what’s not fussy at all? These Blender Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake Bars. They combine a creamy cheesecake filling with a plentiful cinnamon sugar swirl and — as you might have guessed — they use the magic of the blender to get there. And the oven, but there’s no springform pan or cracked tops to worry about. One thing I love about these (there are many), is that you still get a classic crunchy graham cracker crust with these bars but you’ll be mixing brown sugar with your melted butter and graham cracker crumbs, which gives it a little bit of a richer toffee flavor than the traditional. You can use already crushed graham cracker crumbs or you can crush your own… I suppose you could use your blender there, but that’s really more for the next step. That next step would be the filling and it comes together entirely in the blender… CONTINUE READING…

Monte Cristo Sliders

Posted on August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Monte Cristo Sliders

Sweet, salty, and ready to party. On paper, the Monte Cristo is a sandwich that makes very little sense. Ham, turkey, swiss – okay that all seems normal… and then powdered sugar? And jam for dipping? What on earth! But, in reality, when you bite into one it is somehow absolutely delicious and it all makes sense. It’s like the embodiment of what sweet and salty combos should be. And here our Monte Cristo Sliders let you serve up that combo to a whole crew of people with no trouble at all. I love a party slider and I especially love these. You and your guests will too – it’s inevitable! What makes party sliders so easy and convenient is that they rely on a package of Hawaiian rolls for the bread. You simply slice the rolls in half but leave the rolls attached, and place the bottom section in your baking dish as your base. Then, you layer up your ingredients and bake everything at once, so you have easy prep and pull-apart sandwiches for as many as twelve people. It’s almost too easy. In this case, you’re layering those rolls with the aforementioned ham, turkey, and swiss cheese, but then also brushing… CONTINUE READING…

Southern Tea Cake Cookies

Posted on August 1, 2024August 1, 2024 By sg4vo No Comments on Southern Tea Cake Cookies

A light texture and buttery flavor make these cookies truly special. When we get a craving for cookies, there is nothing like homemade to truly satisfy. And, when a cake-like cookie is what you have your heart set on a crispy cookie simply won’t do. Southern tea cake cookies have that wonderful light texture and buttery flavor. But, these cookies also have a centuries-old history in the South. Tea cake cookies are thought to have been created as the South’s answer to European tea cakes (the latter of which are more like cupcakes that are served with hot tea). Enslaved peoples during the 18th and 19th centuries would have served these cookies to the guests of the plantation owners. But when slavery ended the tradition for these cookies continued. Using what they had on hand, the cookies have a simple ingredient list. During the 19th century these cookies were often made with flour, lard, molasses, and a little nutmeg or vanilla and that’s it. African Americans spread the easy-to-remember recipe by word of mouth and the cookies became an integral part of Juneteenth celebrations in the years following the Civil War. Today the ingredient list may look a little different, but these… CONTINUE READING…

Maple Sugar Cream Pie

Maple Sugar Cream Pie

You’ll be hooked on the creamy filling! Oh my gosh, guys, if you’re looking for a silky smooth, decadent dessert with a flavor so rich and delicious it’ll have you begging for more, this is the recipe for you. While we all know and love the classic cream pies – banana and coconut = crowd favorites – we’ve got a different one for you today that we can easily see overthrowing the traditional faves. Embracing a slightly more autumnal flavor, this is a maple sugar cream pie, and WOW is it good. In case you haven’t made a cream pie from scratch before, don’t worry, it’s super easy. While some cream pies require making a thick, egg-based custard in a double-boiler, we make our cream filling without eggs, so there’s no need to fear accidentally scrambling your filling mixture and having to start over. Nope, it’s all easy-peasy over here. Now, to get that intense maple flavor you need two things: maple syrup and maple extract. Maple syrup is really the key here, as you can easily swap in vanilla extract if you can’t find maple extract. Together though, these two knock the flavor out of the park and leave… CONTINUE READING…
